Steamed Rice Flour Breakfast
Ingredients
- For the Outer Dough:
- Rice Flour - 1 cup
- Hot Water - As required
- Salt - To taste
- For the Chana Dal Filling:
- Chana Dal Split Bengal Gram - 1/2 cup (soaked for 1 hour)
- Green Chilies - 3
- Garlic - 1 or 2
- Ginger - A small piece
- Whole Black Peppercorns - 1/4 tsp
- Salt - To taste
- For Tempering / Final Roast Optional:
- Cooking Oil - 1-2 tbsp
- Mustard Seeds - 1/2 tsp
- Cumin Seeds Jeera - 1/2 tsp
- Green Chilies - 3 slit
- Curry Leaves - A few
Method
- Prepare the Dough: In a mixing bowl, take 1 cup of rice flour, add salt and required hot water. Mix well and knead it into a smooth dough. Cover and set it aside for 10 minutes.

- Prepare the Filling: Take the well-washed and soaked chana dal in a mixer jar. Add green chilies, garlic, a small piece of ginger, black peppercorns, and salt. Coarsely grind them without adding too much water (do not make a fine paste). Transfer to a bowl.

- Shape the Breakfast: Take small portions of the prepared rice flour dough, roll into a ball, and flatten it slightly in your palm. Place a spoonful of the chana dal filling in the center and fold/seal it gently into a semi-circle shape.

- Steam Cook: Grease a steamer plate with a little oil and arrange the shaped pieces. Steam cook on medium flame for 10 to 15 minutes until well cooked.

- Optional Tempering: Heat a pan with a little oil, splutter mustard and cumin seeds, add slit green chilies and curry leaves. Toss the steamed pieces in this tempering for a couple of minutes for extra flavor.

- Serve hot with spicy tomato chutney or coconut chutney!

Notes
Do not overcook, as steaming for 12–15 minutes is sufficient for rice flour.
You can adjust the spice level by adding more or fewer green chilies according to your preference.
